An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a number that computer hardware and software use to communicate with each other on a computer network. An IP address is the rough equivalent of a street address or a phone number.

An IP address is not convenient way for humans to refer to computers. The Domain Name System (DNS) translates human-readable names to IP addresses and vice-versa.
