Using the Change Password module
On the Change Password page, you have to specify your old password, and you have to type your new password twice. You will not see any of the characters in your password when you type them; each typed character will appear as an asterisk ("*"). As you type your new password, a password strength meter will assess the strength of the password. After you enter the old and new passwords, click the [Change your password now!] button.
| You should change your password after your account is created. After that, you should change it periodically to prevent unauthorized access to your web site and e-mail. |
One of the two most common ways that a criminal will gain access to your site is to discover your password. Criminals use automated tools to guess passwords, and a password that seems secure to you may be easy to guess by such programs. Trust the password strength meter. Specify a password that is a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Make sure the password strength meter is green and says "Strong" or "Very Strong" underneath.
If you forget your password, we can assign you a new one, but we have no way of retrieving your lost password.
Keep in mind that changing the account password will also change the password of the main FTP user, so change the password in your FTP client when you update your cPanel password or you will not be able to transfer any files.
Recommendations
Protect your password
- Change your password periodically.
- Don't write down your password, memorize it. If you must write it down, keep the written version secure.
- Don't use the same password for multiple web sites. If you use a single password, a thief who gains access to one system may try the same password to gain access to other systems you use.
- Don't tell anyone your password, including our service staff.
- Don't let anyone watch you key your password.
- Don't enter your password on a computer you don't trust.
Choose a good password
Pay attention to the password strength meter. Use a strong or very strong password.
- Use passwords that are least 8 characters long.
- Don't use something you'd find in a dictionary (in any language or jargon).
- Don't use anyone's name, initials, nickname, etc.
- Don't use profile information about you or anyone in your family such as birthdays, phone numbers, license plate numbers, or social security numbers.
- Don't use transformations of your profile information, such as profile data that has been entered backwards, followed by a digit or symbol, etc.
