Publishing Your Site
These are the basic steps to publish a web site.
- Select a domain name and register it
- You may register your domain via Family History Hosting, but we recommend that you do it via GoDaddy or another domain name registrar. They specialize in domain registration whereas we provide the service as a convenience to the subset of our customers who want one-stop shopping.
- Create a hosting account
- Review the hosting packages at Family History Hosting and click the "Order" link to start the process.
- We'll send you an email message when your web hosting account has been created.
- Create web pages on your PC and copy them to the web host
- Genealogists often use software programs to convert their family history data to web pages. For example, Family History Hosting customers who also use The Master Genealogist (TMG) often use Second Site to create their web pages. You can use other programs to create web pages, or create them by hand, or combine the methods as you desire.
cPanel
You'll use a tool called cPanel to manage your site. Managing your site includes configuring email, analyzing site usage statistics, and other management tasks.
Client Area
Use the Client Area to view and update your Family History Hosting account profile, view details about the Hosting Packages and Domains you have with us, Submit Support Tickets and Order Additional Products & Services.
The Client Area is a subset of the Support Area. The Support Area includes links to access the Client Area and other information that is not specific to your account.
Access Credentials
When you signup for an account, you'll be assigned two sets of access credentials:
- A UserID and Password to access cPanel
- A password that you use with your existing email address to access the Client Area
Configuring Email
Family History Hosting provides email support with your web hosting package. If you want to use your domain for email as well as for publishing your site, you must configure your email account(s).
